I've never heard this story before -- curious indeed!

I hadn’t either. The locals in Williamsport, PA believe the story was inspired by the relocation of gravesites from where the old City Hall stands now to the new cemetery on Washington Street. Twain may have become aware of this when he spoke in Wilkes Barre in 1869. The city ordinance for the move was passed just two years prior. “A Curious Dream” was published shortly after his visit to the area.
